Scott Goodyear (born December 20, 1959) is a former Canadian racing car driver who competed in the Indy 500. Goodyear competed in the Indy Racing League and the Champ Car series during his career, winning the Michigan 500 in 1992 and 199In addition, he is famous for coming within inches of winning the Indianapolis 500 on three separate occasions. From 1990 through 2001, Goodyear qualified for eleven Indianapolis 500 races, with the exception of the 1996 event, which he did not compete in because he was not entered. In the 1992 race, he finished second behind Al Unser, Jr., despite starting last (33rd) and finishing 33rd overall. The Mackenzie Financial Corporation was the primary sponsor of Goodyear at the time. The 1995 race was within his grasp, but after leading for 42 laps, Goodyear made a mistake by passing the pace car on a late restart and was relegated to fifteenth position for failing to obey the red and yellow lights. Goodyear finished second once again in 1997, this time after being overtaken by Arie Luyendyk on the back straight on lap 194 of the race. He could have taken the victory had it not been for a contentious restart on the last lap, during which the green and white flag was waved despite the on-track lights remaining flashing yellow. Goodyear, who had anticipated that the race would be stopped due to a caution, was weaving his vehicle to keep his tyres warm when the race was called back to green.
Meanwhile, the eventual winner, Luyendyk, had already started to accelerate away from the rest of the competitors. In 1996, he competed in a handful of CART races for Walker Racing before being injured in a practise accident at the Emerson Fittipaldi Speedway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which kept him out of the sport for the rest of the year. With Treadway Racing in 1997, he transitioned to the Indy Racing League, and in 1998, he moved to Panther Racing, where he remained for three seasons, narrowly missing out on the series championship to Buddy Lazier in the last race of the season. Following a crash with Sarah Fisher in the 2001 Indianapolis 500, he retired from racing and began working as a commentator for ABC and ESPN’s coverage of the Indy Racing League, first with Paul Page, then with Jack Arute, Rusty Wallace, Todd Harris, Marty Reid, and most recently with Allen Bestwick and Eddie Cheever. 1988 saw him take home the Rothmans Porsche Turbo Cup title, driving the Pop 84 / Pfaff 944 Turbo racing vehicle and winning three of the eight races in the season-opening series. In addition, he co-drove the second of the factory-sponsored Porsche GT1 cars in the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans, with Yannick Dalmas and Karl Wendlinger, in the race. Their result placed them in third place, behind the other GT1 and the winning WSC-95 of Joest racing.
